Founded in Florence in 1944, in Via Sant’Antonino 47 red – in the San Lorenzo district, close to the Central Market – Enoteca Zanobini has always been synonymous with Tuscany’s wine tradition. To these days, the cousins Simone and Mario Zanobini are proud holder of the “vinattieri” title (ancient italian for “wine producers”), a category that refers to the Guild of Arts and Crafts, which was created in Florence between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. A habit that reveals how passionate the two are about their work. “This year we celebrate 71 years in the business,” reports Simone Zanobini, our likeable and friendly party. “This activity has always been run by our family, and we always offered the same products. Being on the market without sacrificing quality is a hard task, but there is no greater satisfaction than a customer appreciating your labor”.
Simone and Mario Zanobini’s labour is wine, literally. In addition to managing Enoteca Zanobini, the two own the historic Le Lame farm, located in Greve in Chianti, a few kilometers from Florence. “That is where our grandfather and our fathers were born, those who ran the business before us. We produce wine and oil, which can be found here at Enoteca Zanobini for sale. Our best known product is Le Lame, a Chianti Classico Riserva. But we also produce what we call Lo Spillato, a “young” red wine with low acidity, that can be tasted slightly cold. With a salami and a few slices of bread is not difficult to drink a whole bottle of it! Another very special product is our rosé; we called it Fra Il Lusco e Il Brusco (everyday language for “halfway”). It is a wine that goes well even with the simplest recipes. We also have a cut of cabernet and sangiovese, which is our version of the Supertuscan“.
In addition to household products, Enoteca Zanobini sells about 2500 brands of wines, liqueurs and spirits: “Having to meet customers’ requests, we have a wide variety of products. But we only buy from suppliers we know in person, from businesses with whom we established a trusty relationship over the years“.
Beside buying retail products, at Enoteca Zanobini it is possible to enjoy wine tasting experiences, everyday at aperitif time: “We offer about a dozen qualities of wine, be it red or white. Every week, we sponsor a different type of wine. This way, depending on the season, we can display the most peculiar products among those we usually buy. I refer to lesser known but nevertheless excellent labels, such as Lugana, Sonica dell’Elba, Cerasuolo di Vittoria “. Such an experimental attitude combines with the power of tradition. “A French customer, that we first met years ago and that recently came back to visit – Simone Zanobini reports – told us: ‘many things have changed in Florence, but you always stay the same!'”.
So, what are you waiting for to enjoy a good glass of wine in the heart of Florence?
